Camino ’24: day 0-bis

Sometimes life gives you lemons, and you have to eat them raw. Luckily, I like their taste.

It’s always a bad thing when your flight gets cancelled. This is what happened to us yesterday. We were supposed to start our walk today, and instead I’m writing this at almost 6 PM in the afternoon, waiting to take off for Bilbao with almost a 24h delay.

Yesterday we knew there were going to be delays, but we were still hoping to get to our destination at some point during the night. The flight got pushed later and later in the evening, until EasyJet finally called it quits at around 10 PM.

You can imagine the scenes, with people going crazy at the check-in counter.

They treated us like cattle, as always. Soon after the cancellation was announced, the real challenge began, with 200+ passengers vying for the same flights on the next day, and the same hotels to spend the night in.

The Malpensa (MXP) infrastructure was absolutely awful. No connections to the city, the hotels were all booked. We had to take a cab to get to the town of Gallarate, where we could find the closest room for us.

To add insult to injury, our room had a very bright light that was not working correctly. It just didn’t turn off.

Handyman work going on

Luckily the guy at the reception was able to just disconnect it, and we were able to fall asleep.

What can I say, shit happens.

What matters now is that we are actually leaving. The pilot is giving his usual briefing before take off. We have a full belly and full hearts.

I can’t wait to start walking tomorrow.

Give us some decent enough weather and a clear path to Santiago. That’s all we’re asking for.

The rest will be on us.
